remembering spaces asking
directions/constructing campus map
Mary Hodder
Starting
point: Oxford and Cross Campus Dr. (near Hollman
Tennis Center)
End point:
Boalt Law School, Soda Hall
Landmarks: North Gate, Sather Gate, Campanile, Library
Nodes: Grass
area near the Campanile, plaza east of Dwinelle Hall,
Edges: Hearst, Bancroft east of Barrows Lane to
College Ave, Piedmont, Strawberry Creek
Paths: Strawberry Creek, Cross Campus Dr.,
north/south path direct from Sather Gate to North Gate, Bancroft, Piedmont,
Hearst
People seemed not to know the names of
most buildings, a couple of people remarked after saying they didn’t know the
names that there were not signs on the buildings, most people referred to the
Campanile or Sather Gate or North Gate.
One person leapt east of Sather Gate to Hertz Hall, thinking they were
right next to each other. Some mentioned
the Library. Most people referred to
“above” or “up” as either east up the hill, or north up the hill. They seemed to divide the campus into “quadrants”
where they understood the Cross Campus Dr. and the path between North Gate and
Sather Gate as the dividing points, and then directed me more specifically
within the quadrants. However, many
people didn’t know much about the middle of those quadrants, describing those
areas as “a bunch of buildings” to cross through before getting to Bancroft or
Hearst.
